Rács
város (Serbian Town), Petrovaradin Trench, Petrovaradin Suburb, Neoplanta,
Ujvidek, Neusata and Novi Sad - many names for a city. Many names, but also
many nations living together in one of the most beautiful Danube region cities,
where one can hear many languages in the streets, as well. The first settlements
on the Novi Sad territory come from Neolyth. At the place of the present Petrovaradin,
the Romans already had had their Castrum. The town Novi Sad itself was founded
by the traders and handicraft masters, working on the Petrovaradin Fortress.
Twelve soldiers, twenty bakers, butchers and other handicraft masters remain
registered as the town founders, having bought off from the Austrian/Hungarian
Empress Maria Theresia the privilege of taking out of the feudal chamber/border
guard managment, in 1748. Novi Sad, the cultural and administrative center
of Vojvodina, is situated on the slopes of Fru¹ka Gora, at the place where
the Danube is overlapped by a railroad and the E-5 international road, connecting
Europe with the Balkans Peninsula. For the Europeans, Donau, the Danube, Danubio,
Duna, Dunav, Dunaj, Dunarea is a unique natural heritage and the European
mainstream of a great importance for the Novi Sad region.
Novi
Sad is a modern city, which saved a valuable cultural heritage. It includes
Matica Srpska - the oldest scientific library of the Serbs, keeping in its
funds more than 2.5 million publications. In 1861, the Serbian National Theater
- the oldest professional theater was founded there. With many cultural institutions,
such as Gallery of the Matica Srpska, Memory Collection of Pavle Beljanski (with top works of Serbian painting from the first half of the 20th century),
the Vojvodina's Museum, St. George's Cathedral, with the iconostasos made
by the famous Serbian painter Paja Jovanoviæ, the Catholic Church in the Gothic
Style, a magnificent Synagoge, this city is rightfully called the Serbian
Athens. Colorful streets, ornamented old palaces with reconstructed facades,
constructed as a mixture of the Gothyc period, Baroque, Secession and Neoclassicism,
enrich the city, first of all its center itself. The revitalized Petrovaradin
Fortress, with a hotel, museum, City Archive and many atelliers complete the
tourist offer. Novi Sad is not only the cultural center, but also the real
place for having a good time, since an ideal harmony of the Western culture
and the Southern enjoyment has been accomplished in it. In many restaurants
and csárdas, the dawn is expected with the tamburica music, gastronomic specialties
and good wines. In the Fru¹ka Gora region, there are three wine production
centers: Irig, Erdevik and Petrovaradin, with Sremski Karlovci, where a visit
is organized for the tourists to the wine cellars, specially fitted for tasting
of the Karlovci's wines.
